Tobit is an outstanding example of a faithful Israelite under conditions of exile, but for a time God let him become blind. In fact, we ALL have “blind spots.” We are sharp at noticing them in others, and their ubiquity ought to suggest we might have a few ourselves… .
Given that, it is interesting to see how Tobit is cured of his blindness. It was not done with a simple “TA-DA!” miracle. Instead it took a combination of (an ancient version of) medical treatment, divine inspiration and guidance, and a human application of the medicine that took steps and affected Tobit gradually. In other words, a working out of the healing by divine/human interaction over time.
Generally, that is how our Lord works with us to cure our own blind spots. Patience, trust, steadiness, help from unexpected sources.
We should be alert–these kinds of things are happening to us all the time.
Here is a good way to begin today:
The first line of today’s Psalm, #146
Praise the LORD, O my soul;
I will praise the LORD all my life;
I will sing praise to my God while I live.
And let us pray for one another.
