Exodus 12, verses 7 and 11, excerpt from the first reading for today’s Mass:
7 They will take some of its blood and apply it to the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They will consume its meat that same night, eating it roasted with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. …11 This is how you are to eat it: with your loins girt, sandals on your feet and your staff in hand, you will eat it in a hurry. It is the Lord’s Passover.
We think of the original Passover as connected with the Last Supper, Jesus offering of himself on the Cross and Easter. But all of this is background for every Mass. We consume the sacrificed Lamb of God. We are protected and given new life by His shed Blood. We feed on his flesh. And we receive it with readiness to move on, with “sandals on our feet,” for we are all pilgrims and sojourners on this earth, headed towards our true home.
