Translations of James 3:2a
“…we all fall short in many respects.” New American Bible Revised Edition
“For we all stumble in many ways.” English Standard Version Catholic Edition
“We are betrayed, all of us, into many faults;” Knox Translation
James is speaking particularly here of “stumbling” with our tongues, but the truth of his statement extends into every area of our lives. If we are in the process of being transformed into “other Christs” by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, it is a sign of health to recognize more and more clearly where and when we fall short of acting, speaking, and evaluating as Christ does. This is an “examination of conscience” that extends far beyond a check-list of the commandments! It involves every interaction, every spoken word, every encounter in our day. Did I, in this case, act or evaluate as Christ would? Did I listen for his direction? Do I need to make amends in some way?
If this sounds overwhelming, keep in mind that Christ and early witnesses such as James expect us to make many mistakes, MANY mistakes. So, our stumbles are not to be a crippling, discouraging weight. Simply a recognition that growing up in Christ is like learning to walk or talk as a small child does. Forging ahead and trying again every new day. Christ is beside us and within us to encourage us.
OH, How I needed to be reminded of that!!!
